The Head of HR dashboard: what leadership needs to see

A balanced dashboard model that combines operating reliability, workforce movement, talent health, employee experience and people cost.

A dashboard should support decisions, not display every available metric

The most useful HR leadership dashboard separates signals that require action now from trends that shape longer-term decisions. It should also make definitions explicit: who counts as active headcount, what constitutes regretted attrition, when a vacancy enters time-to-fill and which workforce groups are included.

Use a small executive layer with the ability to drill into entity, location, function, grade, tenure, manager or workforce type.

Operating reliability

These measures show whether core HR services are under control. They are often leading indicators of employee frustration and payroll risk.

  • Payroll readiness and open exceptions
  • Attendance closure by location
  • Pending manager approvals
  • Joiners not fully activated
  • Employee-request ageing
  • Document or credential expiries

Workforce shape and cost

Leadership needs a consistent view of where the workforce is growing, shrinking or becoming more expensive—and why.

  • Active headcount and FTE
  • People cost by entity or function
  • Joiners, exits and net movement
  • Overtime and contingent workforce cost
  • Vacancies and approved positions
  • Span of control and manager layers

Talent and retention health

Look beyond total attrition. Segment movement by role criticality, performance, tenure, manager, location and hiring cohort to identify where intervention is useful.

  • Voluntary and regretted attrition
  • New-hire retention
  • Internal movement
  • Time-to-fill and offer-to-join
  • Performance and goal completion
  • Critical-role coverage

Employee and manager experience

Employee experience is partly the quality of daily systems. Combine survey signals with service and manager-execution data.

  • Engagement or pulse trends
  • Survey action completion
  • HR request resolution
  • Manager approval turnaround
  • Performance conversation completion
  • Policy acknowledgement

Build a review rhythm

Use weekly operating views for closure and service issues, monthly workforce reviews for movement and cost, and quarterly talent reviews for capability, leadership and succession. A metric without an owner, threshold or review cadence becomes decoration.
